BURNOUT AND MENTAL HEALTH
THROUGH THE LENS OF NEUROSCIENCE
Rodolfo Barrueco offers a contemporary perspective on burnout grounded in neuroscience, connecting scientific evidence, practical experience, and existential reflection. An attorney with an international career spanning São Paulo and Shanghai, he is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Neuroscience at King's College London, where he deepens his study of the neurobiological mechanisms involved in mental health.
His approach is based on the understanding that burnout is not merely emotional exhaustion, but also a condition with profound effects on neuroplasticity. From this perspective, chronic stress ceases to be viewed solely as a psychological phenomenon and is instead understood as a measurable biological process, with cognitive, behavioral, and immunological consequences.
By integrating his executive education background (IBMEC, FGV, Donghua University, and Columbia University) with scientific investigation, Rodolfo articulates productivity, purpose, and longevity through an evidence-based perspective. In his view, mental health requires structured strategies: emotional regulation, sleep hygiene, cognitive load management, social connection, and contemplative practices capable of modulating the autonomic nervous system.
As the author of Burnout: From Exhaustion to Self-Knowledge, he argues that burnout can become a turning point. When understood through the lens of neuroscience, burnout is no longer merely a collapse but an invitation to neural, behavioral, and existential reorganization, fostering a sustainable balance between performance, awareness, and well-being.
