Chapter Theme

THE WHY OF LAUGHTER

In the chapter “The Why of Laughter,” Gracce presents a profound reflection on laughter as a tool for healing, human connection, and the promotion of longevity. Drawing on experiences lived during the pandemic, she shares how she found in Laughter Yoga a way to embrace emotional pain, ease collective stress, and rediscover lightness amid a period marked by fear, isolation, and uncertainty. The text combines personal accounts, scientific foundations, and real-life stories to show that laughter goes far beyond a spontaneous gesture: it is a practice capable of improving physical, mental, and emotional health.

Throughout the chapter, the author explains the physiological benefits of laughter, such as reducing cortisol levels, increasing body oxygenation, releasing well-being hormones, and strengthening immunity, always supported by scientific studies and references in the health field.

She also introduces the Laughter Yoga method, created by Indian physician Dr. Madan Kataria, highlighting its inclusive and therapeutic approach based on breathing exercises, playfulness, and human connection.

More than discussing happiness, the chapter proposes a reconnection with the inner child, with spontaneity, and with the joy of living. The author invites the reader to reflect on their own “whys,” arguing that longevity depends not only on healthy physical habits, but also on the ability to cultivate joy, meaningful relationships, and genuine moments of shared laughter.
